Spotlight on Designer: Caldi Design

Pieces from emerging Perth label Caldi Design will feature in a fashion show and photography exhibition at the NW Fashion & Photo Night, Thursday 10th March 2011. Tickets available from New Work Photography.

1. Tell us about yourself.

My background is a bit unusual with my mom being from Morocco and my dad from Germany. In my early childhood we constantly moved between the two countries before settling permanently in Germany. Growing up with these totally different cultures contributed a lot to my view of design and fashion.

2. What inspired the creation of Caldi Design?

This is very simple and said by a lot of designers. I simply don’t find the clothes I like to wear in shops and always crave for something different and unique. Naturally I love designing and sewing and therefore my label was born shortly after I graduated from fashion school.

3. How would you describe your garments?

I like to think of my garments as objects that are interesting and unique. They carry formal elements like structure, texture, contrast and yet emphasize femininity. Categorising them I find difficult, however they are best described as urban art wear. All my clothes are very wearable with attention to detail and versatility. I never follow trends, but try to develop unique designs that I find interesting to wear. My garments often have unusual details, can be worn in various ways and have strong colours.

4. What inspires you when creating a garment?

Often it starts with the fabric itself. When I go out looking for fabrics I often have no particular design in mind. Mostly the fabric ‘tells’ me what to do with it – I don’t just see rolls and rolls of cloth I see tons of ideas and possibilities what to do with it.

A new collection usually starts with an idea, observation, image or anything that might interest me. After the first one or two designs are made, they then lead me to the next piece and so forth.

5. What are your plans for 2011?

To continue to nurture my label by doing what I love doing, developing as a designer and have my range more visible locally.

Exploring the dark side

We recently completed an art photography shoot with the lovely model Rhyannin. This shoot was the first in a series of a black and white study inspired by watching crows in the suburban landscape. The shoot was a combination of fashion and art photographs.

Shot in black and white in bright sunlight and often purposely under- or over-exposed, these images hold an elusive quality hinting at darkness or displacement.

Limited-edition prints of art photographs not available online will be sold at the NW Fashion & Photo Night to raise money for the Global Good Foundation, empowering women from backgrounds of domestic violence.

What is a Make-over and Photoshoot Workshop?

Thinking of attending a New Work Make-over and Photoshoot Workshop but not sure what it will involve? Find out and ask questions here.

Why a Make-over and Photoshoot workshop?

New Work Photography wants to bring the glamour of personal photography to you in a fun, social setting that represents great value. It’s an excellent way to get a ‘taste’ of a personal photoshoot and to see what a difference beautiful styling and studio lighting makes to your photograph. It’s also a way to take time out and reward yourself and to try something you’ve always wanted to do.

What happens in a workshop?

A Half-day Pamper Workshop includes a presentation on skincare with testers to try, a workshop on applying make-up where you can give yourself a new look with help from our experts, simple but glamorous hairstyling done for you, and about 15 minutes with the photographer for some glamour photos, either alone or with your friends. You will also enjoy morning or afternoon tea and refreshments, and a gift bag to take home.

Other workshops include presentations on fashion, personal styling, creativity and health.

Who are the workshops for?

The workshops are for women of any age who want to take a morning or afternoon off to relax, socialise and be pampered. Typically, our workshops attract a range of ages from late 20s up.

Workshop participants may choose to come on their own (they’ll soon make new friends!) or to come with a girlfriend or a group of ladies, to share the fun and laughter.

I’m unsure about getting my photo taken. Tell me more.

Our photographers are skilled in assisting you to relax, to enjoy yourself and to feel confident. The photographer will direct you on how to stand and what to do. It won’t take you long to warm up and start enjoying the studio experience! If you don’t want a photo on your own, you can always have a group photo with friends instead… or try both!

What do I wear?

It’s a good idea to wear clothes that are smart casual or slightly dressy, that you feel comfortable in. Wear bright, block colours rather than prints, logos or washed out colours. Bright white or black are fine, but break them up with a colourful scarf or statement jewellery. Feel free to bring a jacket or accessory for two looks!

What the workshops are NOT

The workshops are not about pushing products at you. Our friendly experts are there to teach you new skills in a fun and social atmosphere, leaving you feeling pampered and empowered! They will highlight certain products and answer questions, but there is no pressure to buy anything. Your photos will be available in a private client file online after the workshop, where you can view and purchase photos at your leisure, as you wish.

Where are the workshops?

We always choose beautiful settings for our workshops. We are currently hiring a space at Pure Bar in Subiaco, which allows you to enjoy the workshop in a stylish yet relaxed cafe setting, with delicious treats to enjoy!

Working it at the warehouse

It always seems to be 40 degrees when I’m doing a fashion shoot and the photo session for Caldi Design was no different. We were grateful for a roof over our heads – a fabulous warehouse on loan to us from Pro AV Integration (a cool company that installs audiovisual equipment in bars, shops and more). Outside storm clouds were building from the cyclone out at sea, but we got the shoot done and the equipment and garments packed away before the downpour began.

We made a hot (pun intended) little team as we sweated it out to create a dramatic fashion shoot – the designer and I, plus stylist Cara from Changing Faces Makeup and models Kirsty and Simone from Cantik Models. It’s great to work with other professionals who are passionate about what they do – we bounced ideas off each other and worked in sync. Thank you to these great girls and to our friends from Pro AV Integration!

Caldi Design garments will feature in a fashion show at the NW Fashion & Photo Night - tickets available now on the New Work website. There will also be an exhibition of New Work’s fashion and art photography (including photos from the Caldi Design shoot) at the event, with all proceeds from sales of limited-edition prints going to the Global Good Foundation, which helps women from backgrounds of domestic violence.

The NW Fashion and Photo Night

New Work Photography recently turned one and this is a good excuse to hold a fabulous party.

The New Work Fashion and Photo Night will provide guests with a number of stylish treats, including a fashion show by the exciting new designer Caldi Design, an opportunity for guests to have their glamorous Style photo taken under studio lights, an exhibition of fashion and art photography, sumptuous canapes and beverages and to top it all off, a range of fashion, beauty and photography door prizes!

In addition to the door prize draws on the night, there will be a couple of competitions leading up to the event, with more chances to win prizes such as one-off garments or accessories and photographic vouchers for personal, event or commercial photography.

The NW Fashion & Photo Night is not only a chance to pamper yourself, dress up and be entertained, but also a chance to socialise and meet new people in arts, fashion and other industries. Hidden underneath the glamour is a great networking opportunity!

If you are interested in arts industries in Perth, if you are a local business owner or if you just want an excuse to dress up, this is your chance. It’s also a great way to see some of New Work’s glamour photography services in action.
